My Mom's Guide to Using iPhoto 2
A step-by-step guide to the everyday features of iPhoto.

Importing pictures from eMail and the Web

Often you will receive photos in an email message, or see pictures on the web, that you want to save in your iPhoto Library.

Doing this is really just a variation on what your learned in the section on Importing Photos from Files.

To import photos from eMail and the Web you need to first temporarily save them to files on your hard drive so you can then import them into your photo library.

Importing images from a Web Page

This process may vary somewhat depending on what Web Browser you use. Safari, Internet Explorer, Navigator, etc. Also the menus may have different labels. But here's the basic process. I know you can figure it out.

Locate the image you want import into iPhoto. Hold down the CONTROL key on your keyboard and click on the image. In the menu that appears there will be an item that says something like: "Save image to disk". Select that menu item. Next a window will appear the have you choose place to save the image. You can put it anywhere, as long as you remember where it is.

Now you can open iPhoto and follow the instruction in the section of this guide for Importing from Disk.

Importing images from an Email message

The details of this process will vary even more dramatically than we saw above with webpage images.

Your email program may allow you to CONTROL-click on the image like we did above. If it does follow the same steps.

If it doesn't, try this: Your email program probably stores the imcoming photos in a folder somewhere on your hard drive. When you find those picture files you can just use the Import from Disk. steps like above.

Here's a few tip on finding these image files. The name of the picture files is probably shown someplace in the incoming email. It will probably be a name like "cutepicture.jpg" or "NC36097.jpg". Use the Find command in the Finder to search for this filename. You only need to find this folder one time. The pic files for all future email images will be in it too.
