My Mom's Guide to Using iPhoto 2
A step-by-step guide to the everyday features of iPhoto.

Making a Duplicate Copy a Photo

It's not very sexy, but it's very valuable.

Later in this section you will learn how to Edit your photos. Cropping, color correcting, fixing "red-eye", removing blemishes. But when you edit your photos, it's smart to NOT make these kinds of changes to the original and only copy of your photo.

But, you can get creative with DUPLICATE copies of your originals, and you don't have to worry about making mistakes. Your irreplacable original photos will be safe and untouched.

Step-by-step:
Duplicating your photos.

  1. In the Organize view, locate the photo you want to make a copy of.
  2. Choose it by clicking on it. A blue frame will appear around the photo.
  3. Select Duplicate from the File menu.
  4. A copy of your photo will appear in the Organize view. Its name, which is displayed in the Info area in the lower left, will contain the word "copy".
  5. Go crazy editing the copy.

Deleting photos from your Library.

Every now and then you will want to delete a photo from your Library. You might want to do this because you Imported the same photo twice, or maybe you made a Duplicate that you no longer need.

To delete a photo, click on it in the Photo Library, then select Remove from Album from the File menu.

Your photo has now been moved into the iPhoto trash bin. You can see what's in the bin by clicking on its name in the albums list along the left edge of the iPhoto window.

You can "un-trash" an item by clicking on it in the trash, and selecting Restore to Photo Library from the File menu.

Photos will remain in the trash bin until you empty it (File menu), but BEWARE. Once you have emptied the trash its contents are completely gone from iPhoto.
