My Mom's Guide to Using iPhoto 2
A step-by-step guide to the everyday features of iPhoto.

Importing from a digital camera

So you've taken a lot of great photos of your family or vacation trip and now you want to move them into your iPhoto Library.

If you have a digital camera that is "Mac OS X compatible" (it will say so on the camera or box), you can follow the directions below.

If your camera IS NOT Mac OS X compatible, follow the instructions to Import from Disk.

Step-by-step

  1. If it's not already, Open iPhoto
  2. Click the Import button near the bottom of the iPhoto window.
  3. Plug the USB cable from your camera to the port on your computer.
  4. Click the Import button near the lower right.
Your photos will be transferred from your camera and will appear in your Photo Library.

Now that you've safely transferred your pictures into iPhoto, you can refer to your camera's instructions for how to erase them from your camera's memory.

Erase camera contents after transfer

Near the Import button is a checkbox labeled, "Erase camera contents after transfer" What does this mean?

After you've tranferred the photos into your iPhoto Library they still exist in your digital camera. But they are now also safely stored on your Mac, so you can safely delete them from the camera's memory.

You could consult your camera's manual for instructions on how to manually erase them from the camera, or you can let iPhoto do it for you.

If you click on the "Erase camera contents..." checkbox before clicking the Import button, iPhoto will erase them from your camera. And you'll be all ready to take more photos.
